THE RACES

You can book for any Race in our calendar.

Our Calendar is expanding all the time and will soon include all the major ocean racing Race classics around the World.

If there is a demand there will be a maxi to race in so log on now and put your name down.

Book a Race and the pre-race training and rest assured that team building and safety training is mandatory.

These big race boats are fast and dangerous you must know what to do and be able to rely on your team mates for fast and positive reactions.

TRAINING

Race training and team building is mandatory as follows:-

  1. Experienced big boat sailors 3 days maxi-familiarisation, team building, safety, pre-race start and day preparation.  Experience must be documented and verified. The maxi race boat Skipper makes the final evaluation.
  2. Inexperienced sailors – 7 day maxi training, team building, safety and pre-race start and day preparation.

Note: those participating in a pre-race Cruise only must do the 3 day training & team building for the next race.

TRAINING

Can you race a Maxi 82’ against the best Maxis in the World? Yes you can!

The crews come mainly from sailors who have already raced or sailed smaller boats and want to experience Maxi racing must do a training period of 7 days before each race with a mandatory period of 3 days for team building for experienced sailors.

Training

Training is not going back to school, but taking the Maxi out and sailing round the Bays, fast, efficient sail handling, safety and learning all about the yacht hands-on.

There is no test, no exam.  Our experienced crew will evaluate strengths and weaknesses and all persons will be positioned to suit the yacht to maximise performance and safety.  Requests for certain positions will be seriously considered e.g. helm, bow mast but once again in the interests of speed and safety.

No-one will be eliminated.  Any elimination will take place before the commitment offer.
All crew members will be encouraged to multi-task and it will be up to the individuals to decide how far he or she wants to take things.
For instance – somebody might want to finish up as bowman.  Our experienced bowman will give that person every opportunity to perform all bow work.

Another person might say 'no way am I going to work up there it looks terrifying'. This will be respected also.
24 people are needed to crew Sorcery efficiently for racing, so there will be positions that will suit any sailor.

After training and during the race, positions will be swopped so - within reason - everybody will be able to maintain any station effectively.
For rough and dangerous conditions of course, the most experienced in each position will take it.

This could be your training opportunity to become a professional crew-member aboard any sailing vessel - enabling you to sail around the world and be paid for it.

At the end of the race everybody determined enough will be proficient at crew-racing a Maxi in any position and there will be an end-of-race certificate to certify this.

Just one passage race on Sorcery will put you ahead of crew vacancies when big boats are looking for crew.

Your certificate will leapfrog you from whatever position or size of boat you have now straight into the big league, with crewing opportunities - amateur and professional - anywhere in the World.

The big thing with Sorcery is that there is no sitting on the weather rail.  The owner, John Walker has spent many miserable miles on many Sydney/Hobart races on the rail(!) so the rail is not mandatory.

Much crew training and seamanship training takes place during passage cruises when we push hard,  sail fast with spinnakers up - giving the lot so as to give everybody the excitement of Maxi Racing and to give longer stopovers at paradise islands.

You will receive a Sorcery Maxi Certificate that is recognised the world over as a being a very high accolade.  Your certificate will easily get you rides on Maxis anywhere in the World.

POST RACE CELEBRATIONS
7 DAYS

This is the real fun side of Maxi racing. You are the stars at the celebrations. The race finish is a big event for the local town and its yacht club and they really turn it on for everybody.  Tourists come from around the world for these big events.
We have to wait and party while the smaller boats are finishing for the big prize-giving parties and celebrations.

You must not miss this carnival of fun and the Maxi crews are always the STARS!

There are positions available for the Pacific cruises between Hawaii, Tahiti and Sydney and returning to California.  Not racing now but island hopping between race destinations, taking many stopovers at interesting and sometimes remote islands, including Cairns, Australia and island-hopping down the Great Barrier Reef to Sydney.

Sorcery is a very fast cruising Yacht between Island stops.

PASSAGE-CRUISING

- to the next international race-start destination

These are the beautiful tourist legs.  Our professional crew relax, as there is plenty of time, so the boat takes the most interesting, exotic and off-the-beaten track tropical islands and mainland stop overs.

The major on/off stop overs are planned to fly crew in and out, but between these major stopovers the boat will take you to paradise and back.  The number and length of the stopovers depends on the weather and the time available.

Between the major stopovers we take requests to visit special exotic islands, and providing it is 'sort of' en route the Skipper can elect to go to any destination.

We are most positive in thinking that our crews would prefer to be languishing at an exotic island paradise somewhere, rather than at a busy tourist airport.

THE PACIFIC PARADISE PASSAGE CRUISING ADVENTURE

Crew as a vacation on an 82’ Maxi Ocean Racing Yacht.
Speed sailing around The Pacific Island-hopping from Hawaii to Sydney, Australia via The Great Barrier Reef.

We sail fast to keep our raceskills honed. Exciting big spinnakers fast runs to give more and longer stop overs.

The route will take you south to the (MS) Mainstop    Marquesas (2000) (Sea passage time 20 days)
Via Palmyra Eanning Ribibati Malden

THE CALENDAR AND TIME TABLE

All dates (except race-start dates and major stop over destinations) can only be approximate and may be altered for obvious reasons - weather, boat repairs, maintenance etc.

Dates for the cruise destinations and island paradises visited are very flexible they will be along or reasonably close to the line between major destinations.

Request for special Island stop overs between  major destinations are always considered and put to the vote, involving the rest of the crew, with the final decision being made by the Skipper.  All our Skippers love visiting a new Island and only have to have a good reason to do so.  A special request from the crew is usually a good enough reason!

The basic route is to go south from Hawaii to get below and out of the main hurricane belt and sail east to Cairns, Australia and down the Great Barrier Reef to Sydney stopping at as many islands as possible.....(oh, life is so hard sometimes...)

THE BASIC CALENDAR

The places named are the major destinations and remain firm destinations. They will only will be delayed due to unforeseen or extreme emergencies. Crew can fly in and out of these destinations by their own arrangements to meet the maxi for the ongoing legs or to return home.

Stop overs between major destinations remain flexible and can be altered by the company or the Skipper of the vessel depending on requests and circumstances at the time .  The crew number booked between race destinations is small compared to the races themselves so there are plenty of spare berth. Changes to personal programmes can therefore be easily altered.  Bookings for further, additional legs can be added whilst aboard.
The boat is in daily contact with the office by phone, radio and computer so all travel and other arrangements can be booked and confirmed.

These passage cruises are so exciting, so unique and so pleasant - especially exploring remote islands - that we strongly advise that you only book a one way air ticket to your pick up destination and book the return flight later from onboard.
You are then very flexible to alter your itinerary - adding extra legs or staying on an island of your choice as long as you like or with your maxi experience under your belt pick up a crew position on a boat returning to your originating home destination.
If you fall in love with the Pacific Islands another possibility is to island-hop using the small trading vessels.  The small inter-island air services serve even the smallest unchartered Islands

THE HURRICANE SEASON

During May to November we sail mainly below the 20th parallel to avoid the worst of the Pacific Hurricane belt.
